About Us

What is NICA?

The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA)

  • A youth development organization

  • Promotes mountain bike racing for grades 6-12

  • Formed in 2009

  • Now 19 leagues in 18 states

  • 8,000 student-athletes in 2015

  • 395 teams

The Wake County Interscholastic Cycling Team was founded in 2016 and is part of the North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League (NC-ICL), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, under the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).

The NC-ICL was organized in 2015 to provide a fun, safe, and high quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. With the cooperation of our partners and sponsors, we are able to provide a competitive mountain bike racing experience.

Regardless of ability level, the NC-ICL is committed to providing this experience for all student-athletes in accordance with NICA’s Five Core Principles: Inclusivity, Equality, Strong Body, Strong Mind and Strong Character.

The NC-ICL is committed to teaching safe riding practices. We believe forming youth teams is the best way for students to learn how to ride safely. Through a fun, safe environment in which our riders can learn fundamental skills we strive to give young men and women a sport that can last them a lifetime. To practice safe riding techniques or to learn how to teach these skills, join our next rider camp or coaches conference.

OUR MISSION is to enable every North Carolina teen to develop a strong mind, a strong body and strong character through lifelong participation in cycling.

The North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League:

  • Fills a niche for students whose needs may not met by traditional interscholastic sports

  • Gets kids outside

  • Welcomes and supports diversity in ability, ethnicity, gender, orientation, and skill level

  • Promotes trail-building efforts and environmental awareness

  • Improves focus and academic performance in our student-athletes

  • Promotes health & fitness in teens & their families

  • Our focus is on youth development

  • There are no team tryouts or team cuts

  • Student-athletes are encouraged -- but not required -- to race

  • Every score counts in team results

  • Non-racing team members may still participate in practices, team rides and other events

  • Student-athletes grades 6-12 and aged 12-19 years can participate

  • Boys and girls compete separately

  • Eight categories of competition at the high school level

    • Freshman (boys and girls)

    • Sophomore (boys and girls)

    • Junior Varsity (boys and girls)

    • Varsity (boys and girls)

  • Teams compete against teams

  • Middle school categories and scoring TBD

Did you know...

  • Less than10% of NICA student-athletes have ever raced a mountain bike.
  • Only 26% of NICA student-athletes have ever ridden a mountain bike before joining a team.

NICA is available to every student-athlete that wants to participate.
